Wildzy and the Hedgehog Highway: Small Gaps, Big Gains

A garden that stops at the fence

Hedgehogs can roam a kilometre or more in a night, but a solid fence line turns a street of gardens into a set of dead ends. The problem is not lack of food; it is lack of connected ground. A hedgehog that cannot pass between gardens has to cross roads more often, and that is where populations suffer fastest.

The cause is usually ordinary garden design. Close-board fencing, gravel boards and tidy borders are practical for people and poor for small mammals. The solution is equally ordinary: a 13cm square gap in each fence, lined up with neighbouring gardens, creates a route that hedgehogs can use without making the garden feel exposed.

Why Wildzy fits the gap

A hedgehog highway only works when the gaps are repeatable, safe and easy to explain to neighbours. That is where wildzy earns its place: it turns a practical wildlife idea into something a household can install and maintain without specialist tools. The point is not to create a reserve in one garden; it is to link many small gardens into one continuous route.

Take a typical suburban terrace. One household cuts a gap beside a shed, the next does the same behind a bin store, and the third leaves a rough corner of long grass as cover. The result is a chain of sheltered movement that a hedgehog can follow under darkness. The takeaway is that connectivity beats isolated habitat features.

What to check before cutting

  • Height and width: aim for roughly 13cm by 13cm, enough for a hedgehog but not a convenient cat flap.
  • Position: line the gap up with cover on both sides, such as a hedge, shed base or dense border.
  • Safety: avoid decking edges, drains, gas pipes and anything that could compromise the fence.
  • Neighbours: agree the route first; a gap that ends at a patio wall is wasted effort.

Maintenance is the quiet part

Gaps silt up, get blocked by pots and are sometimes filled in by well-meaning tidying. A five-minute autumn check keeps the route open: clear leaves, trim back brambles, and make sure the gap still has a clear line of sight. Wildzy is most useful when it supports that routine rather than replacing it.

Hedgehogs do not need a perfect garden. They need a chain of ordinary gardens with one small, maintained opening between each. That is a modest change, but across a street it is the difference between isolated patches and a working highway.
